Covid Vaccine Passport: What in the World is it?

You’ll be surprised!

Covid Edition – April 27, 2021; updated 7-1-21

“Vaccine Passport” is a common phrase amongst travelers these days. So many people have asked me about this and the upshot for travel. There is so much confusion! 🤔 Let’s clear this up once and for all. Here’s a rundown about the Covid Vaccine Passport – Fact vs. Fiction

Check the last paragraph for this week’s exciting info on Europe opening to US citizens this summer!*

Vaccine Passport – Fiction

A Covid Vaccine Passport is something you must buy – NO

I wish that we had landed on a different term, because this seems to be ridiculously confusing to people. Vaccine passports don’t have anything to do with your passport (you know, the one that holds stamps and visas when you travel). “Vaccine passport” is the concept of making certain activities more accessible for those who’ve been vaccinated, and not a physical thing you have to go out and get or purchase.

The white CDC vaccine card you received when vaccinated (shown below) is sufficient to show everywhere that currently welcomes vaccinated Americans.

Covid Vaccine Passport: Fact

A Vaccine Passport may fast-track you, but not having one won’t stop you from going – CORRECT

The travel media discussion about vaccine passports insinuates that proof of vaccination will be required for most international travel, but that is not the case. There hasn’t been one single destination that has announced they’ll only allow vaccinated travelers to come.

Maybe you’ll like this analogy: having a vaccine passport is like going through the TSA PreCheck lane at the airport…travelers without PreCheck can still go through security, but they’ll have to do extra things (love getting halfway undressed – not!).

For those who haven’t been vaccinated, many countries require a recent negative test or proof of recent infection, like a positive antibody test. But, if you have been vaccinated, you may be able to bypass those requirements and go right in.

Covid Vaccine Passport: Fact

You must be fully vaccinated for a vaccine passport – YES

Everywhere that gives a fast track for vaccinated travelers requires them to be fully vaccinated. That means at least two weeks after your last shot.

Vaccine Passport: Fiction

Covid documentation is required for flights within the US – NO

No Covid documentation is currently required within the 49 contiguous states. (I would be surprised if that changed.) Hawaii is the only state that currently requires all visitors to show a recent negative test before flying, but they’re planning to allow vaccinated travelers to bypass that requirement.

Vaccine Passport: Fiction

A Vaccine Passport is required for international travel – NO

Right now you can travel to many countries without any testing or quarantine required, and need no proof of vaccination. I traveled to Dominican Republic in March, and needed nothing but my own statement to enter. There is a huge list of places that require just a recent negative test and not vaccination here: CNN maintains a curated up-to-date list of what countries are accessible.

But in almost all cases that I can see, unvaccinated travelers are still permitted; there may just be a testing or quarantine requirement.

Did you catch this weekend’s exciting news about Europe opening to US citizens? – most will require vaccinations. More on Europe’s opening below.*

Vaccine Passport: Fiction

CDC cards aren’t acceptable; you need a WHO certificate – NO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has a yellow vaccination certificate (an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis), which is required for some countries as proof of vaccination against specific diseases like yellow fever. In March, a rumor started that Americans wouldn’t be able to travel internationally unless they obtained a yellow WHO card to document their Covid vaccine.

This is totally false. There is no country in the world that has said they won’t accept the white CDC card as proof of Covid vaccination. [In June + July in Germany, dining indoors required vaccination – the CDC card was accepted with no question.]

Your white CDC vaccine card is sufficient proof for every place accepting vaccinated Americans. And – apps are being developed!

Vaccine Passport: Fiction

You’ll need proof of vaccination to fly – NO

Airlines aren’t going to require a vaccine passport if the destination doesn’t. You can get on a plane to dozens of countries this afternoon without proof of vaccination. The only thing I had to do in March for my Dominican Republic escape was have a (free) test before returning to the US.

Airlines are the frontline of document verification though, whether it’s an actual passport or a vaccine passport. If you’re flying somewhere where vaccinated travelers are allowed to bypass any testing/quarantine requirements, expect to be asked for your proof of vaccination before your flight (as well as once you arrive).

Covid Vaccine Passport: Fact

Children can’t get a vaccine passport – TRUE so far

You can’t get a Covid vaccine passport if you haven’t had the Covid vaccine. Currently in the US, the Covid vaccines are approved for individuals 16 years old and up. (Pfizer has applied and is awaiting approval for vaccinating 12-15 year olds, and just today, Anthony Fauci said that there are ongoing trials for kids 7 and up.) So if you’re traveling somewhere that lets vaccinated visitors bypass Covid requirements, unvaccinated children are still subject to those requirements. [June 2021 – Unsure what’s happening everywhere, but right now, 12-year-olds can get the vaccine in many locations.]

For most destinations using vaccine passports, families just have to get a recent negative test for the children beforehand. The good news: every country that’s adopted vaccine passports is allowing unvaccinated children with a negative test.

*More on Europe Opening to US Citizens

“The Americans, as far as I can see, use European Medicines Agency-approved vaccines,” said Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, in a Sunday (April 25) interview with the New York Times. “This will enable free movement and travel to the European Union. Because one thing is clear: All 27 member states will accept, unconditionally, all those who are vaccinated with vaccines that are approved by E.M.A.” 😊

The E.M.A. is the drugs regulator for the European Union, and has approved all three vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson) currently being administered in the United States.

Note: individual countries may impose stricter guidelines. And, if you are going to stay in the EU for a long, slow visit, be sure you understand the Schengen Agreement!

In Conclusion

Are you on top of all this? Did you learn something new? Are you vaccinated? I’m getting my Moderna booster on Thursday… Don’t forget to get your card laminated for free at Staples.

a potential app for the Covid Vaccine Passport

Have you found an app to display vaccinations (I haven’t)? I keep hearing about the IATA Travel Pass app; it must be in development.

Update October 2021: If you have CLEAR, you can upload vaccinations into the CLEAR app for a digitized version of your Covid vaccine!

Please speak up if you have any other information or if you have questions. This article was written in response to many questions I’ve had from the community about the Covid Vaccine Passport, and because it’s something I needed to figure out for myself. (Can’t wait to visit my grandbabies in Germany…hopefully this summer!).

Post Script

I made it into Germany, even before it opened! Did you read the story??

  1. I’m so impressed that you’re already in Germany – you’re the intrepid traveler, for sure.
Dying to know how you got the European covid document.

    1. Hey, Juliette – I added that info in the last paragraph of the article. 😊

  2. Great information and ever changing! I’m on board to have a vaccine passport if it helps avoid quarantines, etc. Very excited about the Europe news. 🙂

  3. Thanks for the updated info! I get my second vaccination tomorrow. I’m hoping to bypass quarantines and COVID tests with my “COVID vaccine passport” when I return to international travel.

  4. Update: I booked a hotel and a flight to Germany for mid-June. Fingers crossed that I’ll be able to use them! C’mon Germany!!!

  5. A vaccine passport would hinder people that don’t have access to a vaccine out of the joy of travel. However, the idea of f”astpassing” those that are fully vaccinated would be good, i/e. not having to get tested or tested on way back.

    1. At this point, any travelers into the US will need to show proof of a negative covid test – even vaccinated US citizens. I admire the Dominican Republic’s stance…all the resorts there offer free testing for US citizens before they return home. I thought that was smart of them; great marketing.

  6. Thank you for this clarification about if you need a covid vaccine passport! I was just discussing this today with my daughter and was going to look up info on it. I also love the tip about getting your card laminated for free at Staples!

  7. Thanks for clearing this up! I got both my vaccines in March. I wasn’t sure what a Covid vaccine passport was, so thanks for this! I’m hoping to make it to Canada soon to see my dad!

  8. Thanks for enlightening all of us. There is so much misinformation out there. I haven’t yet vaccinated and I can’t wait for my turn.

I”m hoping that one day the majority of the people around the world gets vaccinated and economy will open up again.

  9. Thanks for the tip about staples laminating the cards! Ours is starting to get worn out!!!

  10. Great to get clarification on all of this. It seems that they are adding information all the time, hard to keep up to date on it all sometimes.

  11. Should be interesting to see how this all pans out! I did not receive any card after my first jab (still waiting for second)… but things in Canada may be a little different. Can’t wait til we can hit the road again!

  12. I’m so happy the vaccine is available and working. I have no issue with being asked for proof of vaccination and really hope that as we move forward, more events and travel will open up. This is a step in the right direction.

  13. This is so helpful! We are keeping an eye out, watching as more countries open. It’s also helpful to know Staples will laminate the card for you 🙂

  14. Great tips and advice! This information is so important for us travelers that are ready and want to find the best way to get going!! Thank you

  15. I had heard of the vaccination passport happening, but didn’t realize it had nothing to do with the passport and that you could travel without it. Thanks for taking out the confusion and bringing me up to speed on things!

  16. Lots of good information here. But I’ve been hearing that we shouldn’t laminate our vaccine cards, in case we need to document that we’ve gotten a booster should this become necessary in the future. Either way, it’s possible to get a replacement vaccine card if you lose yours or need one that hasn’t been laminated.

  17. This article was so informative and not slanted one way or another with political bias. Thank you so, so much!

  18. I hope you get the opportunity to visit your grandchildren in Germany. Great information about what the Covid vaccination passport is and what it isn’t.

  19. I’m excited you get to visit your grandbabies in Germany! So excited that we can travel to Europe again!

  20. This is a perfect article, so useful, thank you for the deep explanation. And for keeping on top of all this for the rest of us. I’ve been vaccinated but don’t have a CDC card, how do you get one?
I be seen really low airfares to Europe right now, do you think it’s safe to book a flight? What’s the best way to find the best rate for travel?

    1. Hm – you weren’t given a CDC vaccination card when you got your vaccine? I haven’t heard of that; most people get one at their first shot. Where are you located? The first step might be to contact your state Department of Health to get your records.
Yes, the airfares to Europe are incredible. The safest way to book – as far as getting a refund – is direct with the airline. My tips for finding the best deals are, 1. Search in “incognito” mode, 2. Search Google flights , 3. Search Momondo, 4. Search Skyscanner, 5. Search Scott’s Cheap Flights 6. Put it in Hopper to track prices, 6. Ensure the fare is refundable (also any lodging; again, book direct).
Hope that helps! Let me know about your CDC vaccine card.
