Where in the World can U.S. Citizens Travel Right Now?

Updated September, 2021

Covid travel restrictions for everyone, not just US citizens

The map below updates continuously.

I entered Germany a day before it opened to vaccinated US citizens, on June 19 (read that story) – now, most of the European countries are open, with more good news coming I hope…stay tuned!

Are you a traveler? Feeling like your wings are clipped? There are many places that we can visit, including lots of islands with beaches (my fave). Here’s a ton of info:

Try out the map!

This is the interactive map – click this link. Then, toggle the blue switch at the top for if you’re vaxxed or not. Put in what passport you hold, where you’re starting your journey, your destination, and a new tab will open with entry information (updated continuously). You’ll get general Covid entry requirements for that country, with instructions on what will be needed as far as any documentation, internal restrictions and closures, what masking requirements are, and transportation information.

There are links to any documents you may need. Wonderfully, any visa requirements are spelled out as well, again, with links to apply online.

Note: if you’re looking at Europe, or tiny islands, use the “+” button to enlarge the map! Here’s what the results look like:

Do I Need a Vaccine Passport?

What is a Vaccine Passport? If you don’t know, read that link. In actuality, there aren’t very many countries in the world that require a Covid vaccination to enter – but if you’re not vaxxed, you’ll need a negative Covid test, and may need to quarantine. Check your destination on the map above!

When I traveled to Spain and Germany, my white CDC vax card was accepted, and in Germany, an apothecary generated a QR code for me, acceptable throughout Europe. Double check the country website for specific requirements (e.g., Spain has its own unique form that incoming travelers must complete).

I’m excited to report that vaccination records can be uploaded to the CLEAR app – that’s probably the very best solution: a digitized vax record and the physical CDC card.

Considerations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that vaccinated Americans can travel, and many countries are welcoming international visitors. As the Delta variant continues to spread, consider this: the CDC states that there have been some breakthrough cases in vaccinated people, and that they can also spread Delta to others.

Naturally, the entry requirements are quite fluid and ever-changing as variants pop up and pandemic numbers change, so please check your specific destination before you make plans…and, I suggest always booking fully refundable lodging and transit, and always directly rather than through third party entities.

In Conclusion

Did you know that any Staples Office Supply Store will laminate your CDC vax card for free?! Great if you’re traveling and need to show it. I clipped mine into my passport.

The European Commission is changing its recommendations on a biweekly basis, so follow your destination’s restrictions carefully. They are rightly upset that their citizens have been denied entry to the US even if vaccinated, and they’re tired of it. [The news is that EU residents will be able to come to the States starting in November, 2021.]

Lots of islands and beaches in the Caribbean, Mexico, and the Seychelles are open. (Sign up for my newsletters below, for immediate discounts on tons of beach vacations.)

Suz’s travels, so far.

I’m so ready to go! I’ve been grounded long enough…

Please let me know if you find any different info than this…it’s tough to keep up!

  1. I’m currently in the Dominican Republic, enjoying a beach vacation; no restrictions coming in, but I’ll need a negative covid test to re-enter the U.S. And, I’m happy to say that the resort will give me a test for free!

  2. Great info! I probably wouldn’t want to travel internationally right now. The situation is volatile. Travel can always wait when the time is right.

  6. Thanks for making this information compactful! I am not sure I am ready to travel yet…but since I am from NY, returning from many of these places may require self-quarantining….ugh!

  7. A lot of helpful information on where you can travel and when you need to have your covid test done. Great travel resource during this pandemic with regular updates for current situations.
